El cáncer de mama (CM) constituye un importante problema sanitario, social y económico. El CM es el tumor maligno más frecuente en los países desarrollados. Aunque la mortalidad por CM ha disminuido en los últimos años gracias al desarrollo de programas de cribado y a la mejora de los tratamientos, el CM sigue siendo la principal causa de muerte por cáncer en las mujeres de estos países. Existen diversos factores de riesgo claramente relacionados con el riesgo de CM. Factores como la edad, la predisposición genética, los antecedentes familiares, la patología benigna de la mama o la densidad mamográfica no son modificables, pero existen otros como la obesidad en mujeres posmenopáusicas o el uso de terapia hormonal sustitutiva combinada sobre los que es factible actuar para disminuir el riesgo. El ejercicio físico, sobre todo en mujeres posmenopáusicas y la lactancia materna son factores claramente relacionados con la reducción de riesgo de CM. Mejorar el conocimiento de los factores de riesgo modificables y los factores que reducen el riesgo de CM es importante para diseñar estrategias que disminuyan la incidencia de este tumor.
