La Federación Internacional de Ginecología y Obstetricia (FIGO) realiza una actualización periódica sobre la los diferentes tumores ginecológicos, que incluye su clasificación. La utilización de una clasificación estandarizada es fundamental para poder estandarizar y avanzar en el conocimiento y el manejo de los tumores ginecológicos. Las clasificaciones han ido actualizándose en paralelo al progreso en los conocimientos de la clínica, la anatomía patológica, la radiología y la biología molecular de estos tumores. En 2023, por primera vez, se han tenido en cuenta datos de alteraciones moleculares para clasificar el cáncer de endometrio y los carcinosarcomas.
